As a young kid in 1988, Green was the first album I remember truly catching my eye as an album, by a band. It sounds silly writing about it now, but seeing that yellow-brown cassette cover at a friend’s house and hearing that music was some strange kind of awakening, a realization about creativity, about messages and most of all selfless collaboration. On the back was a simple statement: “All songs by Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe.”
R.E.M. has called it quits of course, the end of an era, and surely a documentary about this great American rock band will follow, but first, Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, a career retrospective that also features the band’s three final recordings from sessions in Athens, Ga. this summer. Watch the gripping trailer for the new collection here.
